The sun shines brightly today in Sicily.
For an American student like me, studying in Italy for only one semester, I knew that the opportunity to work in a place like this for such a great cause wasn’t something that I could pass up.
We woke up bright and early to take the bus to the fields outside of Corleone. It was beautiful weather for working outside. While the sun rose higher over the hills, and the dew melted off the fields, I looked around at the work that we were doing. I watched young people, Americans and Italians, working together, and it became clear to me that when people come together for a good cause, all barriers can be overcome.
I had a sense that this would be an experience of a lifetime, and I was right. I am sure that I will never forget this experience.
Oh, and I almost forgot: I tasted some of the tomatoes while we were picking them. They were delicious.
Il sole splende luminoso oggi in Sicilia.
Per uno studente americano come me, che studia qui in Italia per un semestre, ho capito che l’opportunita di lavorare in un posto come questo per una causa così bella non era qualcosa che mi sarei potuto lasciar sfuggire. Ci siamo svegliati presto per prendere l’autobus per i campi vicino Corleone. Il tempo era bello per lavorare fuori. Mentre il sole cresceva sopra le colline e la rugiada si scioglieva nei campi, ho guardato intorno il lavoro che stavamo facendo. Ho guardato i giovani, degli Stati Uniti e dell’Italia, lavorare insieme ed e’ diventato chiaro per me che quando le persone si uniscono per una buona causa, tutte le barriere possono essere superate.
Ho avuto l’impressione che questa sarebbe stata un’esperienza unica nella vita, e ho avuto ragione. Sono sicuro che non dimentichero’ mai questa esperienza.
Dimenticavo: ho assaggiato alcuni pomodori mentre li stavamo raccogliendo. Erano squisiti.

This last weekend students from the University of Syracuse traveled to Sicily to visit historical sites relating to each of our different classes, and to work in the fields that were once occupied by the mafia. We spent two nights in Corleone and half of a day working the tomato fields. There was about 30 students from the Syracuse University and around 20 Italian students from Napoli and we all worked together picking tomatoes. There was no obligation for any of us to do the hard labor of cultivating tomatoes, it was an optional decision that everyone chose to participate in. From 8 in the morning to 1 in the afternoon we harvested almost two full trucks of tomatoes and made many friends along the way. All of the people working with the cooperative were very friendly and everyone wanted to help each other. The Italian students got along great with all of the Americans and we made some friendships that will not be forgotten, all for the cause of giving back to a community that had so much taken from them. Our time in Sicily was unforgettable, and very rewarding and I hope the little that work we did can help, even if it is a small step.

Questo fine di settimana scorsa gli studenti dall’Università di Syracuse hanno viaggiato a Sicilia per visitare i luoghi storici raccontando a ciascuno dei nostri diversi classe e per lavorare nei campi che erano occupati dalla mafia. Siamo rimasti due notte a Corleone e per mezza giornata lavorando i campi di pomodori. C’erano 30 studenti dall’Università di Syracuse e circa intorno 20 studenti italiani da Napoli e abbiamo lavorato insieme a scegliere i pomodori. Non eravamo obbligati a coltivare i pomodori: era una nostra decisione e tutti hanno scelto di partecipare.
Dalle 8 nella mattina all’una nel pomeriggio abbiamo riempito quasi due macchine di pomodori ed abbiamo fatto molti amici durante il lavoro. Tutte le persone che lavorano con la cooperativa sono stati molto gentili e tutti hanno voluto aiutare l’altro. Gli studenti italiani sono andati d’accordo con tutti gli americani e abbiamo fatto alcune amicizie che non saranno dimenticate, tutto grazie alla causa comune di restituire a una comunità qualcosa che le è stato tolto.
Il tempo trascorso in Sicilia è stato indimenticabile e molto gratificante e spero che il lavoro che abbiamo fatto sarà di aiuto, anche se è un passo piccolo.
